RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
