Elden Ring's Rolling Dodge Warrants to Be Celebrated

If you've played this acclaimed title, or most other third-person combat game, you're likely well-versed in the wonderful mechanic referred to as the “dodge roll.” This evasion technique lets your avatar to perform a front, lateral, or rearward ground roll to avoid any enemy attacks and create distance from opponents. Appears practical, right?

The dodge roll, however, has received plenty of criticism, not simply due to the tumbling; some have dubbed it dumb, a cop-out, and an unrealistic move — and sometimes, I concur. Picture me somersaulting past nearby enemy groups in The Witcher 3 — they can't hit me! But Elden Ring's dodge roll stands as the roll to top all dodge rolls rolling dodges, and here's the reason.

Regarding this title, the developers found an excellent method to counter all sentiments claiming the maneuver is not challenging enough: simply give all foes overwhelming force, triple that, and all heroes who dares come near them will appreciate deeply for their dodge-roll ability, me included. When the stakes are this high, pulling off a perfect dodge seems like an accomplishment, not a cheat.

No different defensive move in Elden Ring approaches this sense of satisfaction and consistency, since rapid sprints offer limited distance and defensive postures are readily overcome by tough opponents. A person once suggested hopping as the main Elden Ring dodging technique, but besides failing to offer optimal placement, It wasn't clear to me taking a crushing hit might boost my prospects of beating enemies (skill issue, perhaps).

Learning the Move

Although this evasion move offers respite in an incredibly challenging experience, it isn't without skill. To begin with, Elden Ring's rolling dodge only triggers a window of invulnerability once you let go of the roll control, which hinders a quick, panicky escape from dangerous scenarios. Furthermore, while it might move you aside from foes, it's far more effective to utilize it as a moment to advance, ideally to their rear, and land some hits. And, finally, it remains necessary to understand and anticipate enemy attacks, since evading too early of an extended wind-up might terminate your protection before the blow lands… causing significant harm.

A Well-Designed Feature

Even though rolling-dodging in quick succession might seem rather absurd (give it up for Geralt again), this isn't really an option in the game. Naturally, that fails to transform it into a believable fighting maneuver — the very cause why it would be terrifying to see it in a game like a historical simulation — but this is a flashy fantasy title we're talking about, thus why worry?

Similar to any respectable dodge roll, Elden Ring's dodge motion is improved by a small acrobatic jump at the commencement, giving it an energetic feel instead of dropping the character onto the ground. According to your loadout, the maneuver might appear extremely nimble or somewhat sluggish, but it remains faster and more fluid than the rolling dodges used in Dark Souls. Admittedly, you may embed your oversized sword in the dirt if you're carrying one, but that's your own fault for failing to use a crossbow (In jest — avoid using Elden Ring with a crossbow).

The Perfect Balance

Elden Ring's dodging mechanic creates the perfect balance between obstacle and possibility, granting chances of triumph while threatening to take that hope away at the tiniest misstep. Master this technique, and you'll be rewarded with more than triumph, but satisfaction.
