The Gaming Giant Hires Apex Legends Producer to Boost Struggling Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Transition Comes After Poor Reception

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a more defined game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now reimagining the project with a revised approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

The news echoes a similar move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock development group.

Below is the entire message from the president's announcement:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented creators we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to continue.”

Given your hard work and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the necessity for a clearer vision.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the criticism to heart and revamped the title with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our audience.

The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. After a period of conversations, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.

His management and experience in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having dedicated the past decade and a half creating and leading some of the most recognizable series in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in greeting Ben soon. We are all looking forward to continue observing the progress of the game in the time to come.

David

Title Details and Concept

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. At the time, the developers presented the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the official summary explains. "Challenge the rivals with unique powers, risks, and challenges that evolve every round. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, risk it all, and trust your squad can achieve the highest spot? The choice is up to you."

The game has not yet received an announced launch window or platforms, but fans can expect more updates as production continues.
